WHAT IS ORIENTAL MEDICINE?
Oriental Medicine (OM) refers to the ancient and modern practices of East Asian medicine that incorporate Acupuncture, Herbology, Bodywork, Nutrition, Meditation, and Movement (such as Tai Chi) therapeutics. It is also sometimes called “TCM,” which stands for Traditional Chinese Medicine. The philosophical roots of OM view the body, mind and spirit as interpenetrating realities of existence that affect the vitality and flow of one’s life force, known as Qi (pronounced “chee”). In simpler terms, your state of health is determined by the balance of the three forces that make you, you.
The healing practices of OM are administered by skillful practitioners who harness and balance this energy within the body, bringing it to areas of weakness and dispersing it from areas where it has become excessive and pathogenic.
WHO PRACTICES ORIENTAL MEDICINE?
In Massachusetts, less than 10% of Licensed Acupuncturists are certified in Oriental Medicine, however all New Harmony practitioners hold the Diplomate of Oriental Medicine, as we believe that the OM level of training is integral to the quality of care we can provide. Diplomates of O.M. are examined by the NCCAOM (National Certification Commission for Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine) and can be recognized by the credential: “Dipl. O.M. (NCCAOM).”
